DENTAL CARE

At Pet Express Animal Hospital we provide a full range of procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in dogs, cats and various special species, including oral examination, radiology, dental cleaning, periodontal surgery, and tooth extractions. Dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats. Over 50% of cats and 85% of dogs over the age of 3 have dental problems that require professional treatment. The consequences of leaving dental disease untreated include:

  • Oral pain and infection

  • Loss of teeth

  • Potential infection to major body organs including heart

  • Diminished quality of life

Veterinarians use the same equipment and anesthesia as human dentists. They perform the same types of services – root canals, oral surgeries, restorations, orthodontia, etc. Animals that receive proper dental care can live happier and healthier lives. If your pet has periodontal disease, the vet will take digital dental x-rays to see the extent of the damage below the gum line. These x-rays do not contain a high risk of radiation exposure like traditional x-rays. Instead, this technology allows veterinarians to view results quickly and project them on a screen. A dental cleaning will involve extensive teeth cleaning and polishing to remove excess tartar and plaque build-up—all of which can cause serious periodontal disease.

Some of the routine procedures we perform include:

  • Endodontic therapy

  • Jaw fracture repair

  • Tooth extractions

  • Restorations

  • Orthodontics

  • Restorative dentistry

  • Treatment of periodontal disease

  • Temporomandibular joint surgery (TMJD)

  • Oral and maxillofacial cancer surgery

  • Facial reconstruction

Facts about the care/service

Dental cleanings provide your pet with improved dental health that decreases their risk of losing teeth, experiencing discomfort, and saves you extra costs. Most veterinarians recommend starting a dental care routine at home, starting with gentle tooth brushing from the front teeth to the back. It is also recommended to use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets only. By starting a dental care regimen at home, you can ensure easier dental cleanings, x-rays, and other procedures for your pet.

Which steps will my vet take during a professional teeth cleaning?

Your veterinarian will complete an exam, looking for signs of dental problems, such as:

  • Loose or broken teeth

  • Extra teeth or baby teeth that have been retained

  • Discolored teeth

  • Bad breath

  • Swelling, pain, or bleeding in or around the mouth

  • Plaque or tartar buildup

You should also let your vet know if any symptoms such as abnormal chewing, drooling, dropping food from the mouth or reduced appetite (which may be a sign your dog is experiencing tooth pain).

This assessment will also determine whether your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia, then complete additional diagnostics if required. Once we have safely anesthetized your pet, we complete a full oral exam (tooth-by-tooth) and charting.

We will also clean and polish their teeth and under the gum line while they are safely under anesthesia. Each tooth is probed and radiographed, then a fluoride treatment is used. A dental sealant is applied to fight plaque. If advanced periodontal disease is identified, we create a treatment plan and review it with you.

How can I keep plaque off my dog’s teeth?

Pup parents have an important role in helping their furry friends fight dental disease. We recommend these tips for maintaining your dog’s excellent oral health:

  • Brush your dog’s teeth daily and remove any debris or plaque with a finger brush.

  • Use a plaque prevention product (your vet can recommend reputable ones) that you can apply to your pet’s teeth and gums. These products help prevent buildup of plaque.

  • Provide dental chews, food or treats designed to help prevent plaque buildup and tartar.

Dental care is an essential part of your pet's overall health. Book your dog’ annual appointment if it is on your to-do list - your pup will thank you.
